First Day Proceedings


World Sindhi Congress (WSC) organized an international conference in Washington DC. on July 2-3, 1994 The objective was to prepare an agenda for the coming WSC meeting in August 1995 in Geneva, coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the UN Commission on Human Rights' Sub-Commission on the Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities.

Various international human rights activists and representatives of UN/NGO's and political organizations were invited. The prominent participants includes Mr. Robert Parry, Member Parliament, UK, Mr. Nairanjan Dudani, Chairman WSC, Mr. Munawar Halepoto, Secretary General WSC, Mr. Alvaro Senturias, Jr., Chairman Asia-Pacific Task Force on UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Ms. Wilda Spalding, a human rights activist and leader, Dr. Safdar Sarki, Deputy Secretary General WSC, Mr. Nazur-ul-Islam Bose, Trustee Institute of Muslim Minority Affairs, Mr. Ali Nawaz Memon, a senior Financial Analyst for Asia-Pacific in World Bank, Sylivia M. Schneble, President of OMNIARTISTS and a human right activist and journalists for the International Human Rights Consortium, and other North American Sindhi intellectuals. This conference was in-absentia chaired by Mr. G. M. Syed. Various other Sindhi leaders and intellectuals were also invited to the conference but could not attend the conference due to unjustified refusal of visas from US Consulate. The first day of the conference was dedicated for the invited speakers and the formation of the working groups for the next day. At the beginning Dr. Dudani the chairman of WSC proposed that His Excellency G. M. Syed as the Life-Chairman of the WSC, and was seconded by Dr. Safdar Sarki, Deputy Secretary General and approved by the conference. Dr. Halepoto proposed that Dr. Dudani should continue as Vice-Chairman of WSC, which also was approved by the conference. After the welcome address by Mr. Dudani, an annual report on the activities of the WSC and current socio-political situation in Sindh, was presented by Dr. Halepoto. In his report he described the main purpose of the WSC as: a) highlight the developments affecting Sindh & Sindhis, inside as well outside the country, b) defend the historic national rights of Sindhis, including the right of the self-determination. He also presented a summary of the efforts and the successes of WSC in bringing the Sindh human rights issue in international fora, especially in UN. He showed his discontentment to the US Consulate for blocking various Sindhi leaders and activists for attending this vital conference. He also demanded the release of Mr. G. M. Syed, a 91 year old Sindhi nationalist leader.

Ms. Wilda Spalding described the importance of the various international organizations and explained the strategies for approaching them. She also showed a document issued by UN Economic and Social Council regarding the human rights and national rights of Sindhis. This document was submitted to UN by the International Association of Educators for World Peace, a UN/NGO.

Mr. Ali Nawaz Memon presented a paper on "My Vision for Sindh 2000." In his presentation he outlined the basic goals Sindhis want to achieve in future. He also presented various options and strategies available. He emphasized on the poverty reduction and violation of human rights in Sindh. His speech was followed by Mr. Alvaro Senturias, Jr., who expressed his concern and solidarity to the Sindh and Sindhis. Mr. Senturias is originally form Philippines and has been involved in human rights struggle from last decade. Mr. Nazur-ul-Islam Bose also showed his discontentment over the exploitation of Sindhis and promised his support to the struggle of Sindhis. He also showed concern at the continuous detention without trial of His Excellency G. M. Syed and demanded his immdiate release.

Mr. Robert Parry, British Member of Parliament, in his speech expressed concern over the human rights violation in Sindh. Mr. Parry belongs to the Labor Party and has advocated the human rights struggle in China, Hong Kong, South Africa, India and Pakistan. Recently he has presented various motions in British parliament regarding the human rights violations in Pakistan in general and Sindh in especial. He promised to continue and enhance his efforts in this direction. He also showed his concern over the imprisonment of His Excellency Mr. G. M. Syed and demanded his immediate release. He branded his detention as immoral and a violation of human rights of the individual. He promised to set forth his concern with the Pakistani Ambassador in the UK.

Second Day Proceedings


The second day of WSC International Conference held in US was dedicated to the preparation of the agenda for the coming WSC meeting in August 1995 in Geneva, coinciding with the 50th Anniversary of the UN Commission on Human Rights' Sub-Commission on the Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities. At the beginning of the day the list of resolution was prepared. All the delegates and the attendees discussed each resolution in details and gave their feedback. These resolutions contain the major important issues concerning the human rights violations, detention of political prisoners, Pakistan government's negligence towards the social, cultural, environmental and political right of Sindhis. All the resolutions were passed unanimously.

The next session was a main crust of the conference. In this session a tentative agenda for the coming conference in Geneva was prepared. The major tasks were outlined and their scope was defined. It was decided that WSC will prepare for the five tasks: 1) Sindhi-Priest-Kings: The Culture of Peace, 2) "Save Sindh Fund", 3) Modern Concepts of Self-determination, 4) Economic Challenges of Asia-Pacific Region, and 5) Human Rights Violation. Five working groups were prepared. These working groups are responsible to do the research on these topics and define these concepts in global sense and make a Sindh as case study. These working groups will also contact with the various international scholars and artists who have expertise on these topics.

In the last and concluding session the WSC presented Sindhi Ajraks and caps to all the distinguished guests including Mr. Robert Parry, Member Parliament, UK, Mr. Alvaro Senturias, Jr., Chairman Asia-Pacific Task Force on UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva, and Mr. Nazur-ul-Islam Bose, Trustee Institute of Muslim Minority Affairs. They were also made a honorary members of WSC. Later Ms. Sylivia M. Schneble, President of OMNIARTISTS presented a suggestion of forming a "The Sindh Cultural Heritage Foundation."

Finally, Dr. Halepoto Secretary General WSC presented concluding remarks and gave a brief schedule of future events and activities of WSC.
