WSC Condemns the Assault of Sindhi Activist-Expresses its Solidarity with the Struggle for Fair Water Distribution
The World Sindhi Congress (WSC) expresses its extreme concern over the recent arrest of Sindhi activists and leaders. Several activists including some prominent Sindhi leaders were brutally assaulted and arrested by Hyderabad police early this week. The activists were arrested when they gathered in downtown Hyderabad to hold a peaceful demonstration protesting against the Water Scarcity in Sindh.
Dr. Safdar Sarki, Chairman WSC, reassured their solidarity to Sindhi people's struggle for the fair water distribution of Indus River water. For Sindh, whose major source of income is agriculture, recent irrigation failures have caused a great damage to the region's economy. Many towns and villages do not even have drinking water. A severe drought is expected in many areas of Sindh.
WSC is also organizing a protest rally in front of the Pakistan Embassy on March 23rd, 2001. A WSC delegation led by its Vice Chairperson Dr. Rubina Shaikh will attend the UN Human Rights Session next week, where it will bring Water Issue in front of international community
