A Flower That Fades
Editorial
Daily Barsat, 6th April 1995

It is a mourning day for all men of conscience particularly the South Asian subcontinent. The news of said demise of G.M Syed a person, Who was witness to nearly whole of 20th century developments, has stunned us. We are in a state of complete shock and grief, We are finding it difficult to pick such words to Portray the depth of sorrow, we are gripped by. The fact that G.M. Syed died in the custody is maddening. Expressing our deep concern on this tragedy Daily BARSAAT Karachi in its bold editorial wrote thus on Sunday 25th of December 1994.

"There is no rationale in keeping an ailing person of the age of 91 years tied in the shackles of a case whose Trial has not yet commenced, though several years have elapsed after registration of the case during Jam Sadiq Ali's Chief Ministership. Had this case been sent to a normal court its proceedings would have been finalized, but in the special court which is constituted for the purpose of prompt disposal. The case is lying in the state of impasse with no signs of its trial in the future as well".

Paying rich tributes to his services, Daily BARSAT Karachi wrote in the same editorial.

Those who have closely witnessed the trail body of G.M. Syed are fully aware of his personality since his childhood, knowing that he has been deeply influenced by the surge of different movements and is allegiance with his ideas has been firm and unwavering. At an early age of fourteen years, he started his career as a Politician. In 1919 he became the president of Local Board of his own Tehsil. In 1928, he became the president of Karachi District Board. In 1930 he organized Hari conference and became its secretary. In 1937 he was elected member of Sindh legislative Assembly. In 1946 he dissociated from the Muslim League and formed a new party Progressive Muslim League, the same year, he was elected as a leader to the Coalition party in the Sindh Assembly. In 1954, he acted as Chairman of Sindhi Adabi Board. In 1955 he played an active part in the formation of Pakistan National Party. In 1966, he formed Sindh United Front. In 1971 he founded Jeay Sindh Movement."

In another editorial on 22nd of January 1995, Daily BARSAT Karachi wrote:

"G.M Syed an extensively well read Politician is author of several books and is famous for being an unbending adherent of his beliefs. Since he was one of the founders of Pakistan, he personally witnessed all the preceding movements in undivided India, which rattled the power base of British Imperialism. In the background of those movements, he formed his opinions and pursued them actively in his political life."

In his last days his passion for Sindhu Desh knew no bounds. One can imagine the degree of his clarity on the subject by the glimpse on this small piece taken from his book A case for Sindhu Desh:

The ruling class in Pakistan by their short sightedness and instability set the entire course of their oppressing and exploitative state machinery to bear down on the weaker nationalities and crushing them into abject surrender. The Bengalis, Sindhis, Balochis and Pakhtoons, saw no alternative before them but to stir themselves into a posture defiance. There was a rising un-rest among them, which could never be crushed. In the gathering storm East Bengal secured its freedom. The Balochis and Pakhtoons are in the midst of the fight. The Sindh his stand awakened and their movement for national freedom under the slogan of Sindhu Desh has already commenced. Quite a number of them are suffering for indefinite terms of imprisonment in jails. Some have sacrificed their lives for the cause. The struggle for national liberation of people in Pakistan is last reaching its decisive stage. All freedom struggles have been hard and difficult. No fighter for freedom has waited till it became soft and easy to take it. Every freedom struggle has to start from a position of weakness, gathers strength as it proceeds along and confronts the enemy at the last decisive moment from a position of strength when it delivers a knockout blow and sends it to hell."

With such colossal thought action Saeen G.M. Sayed brought into International focus the mugodma of his beloved people and land. The style and strength with which he fought the falsifiers of history and exposed the conspiracies and intrigues behind the close shutters, is well before the people of Pakistan. This great leader of Sindhi masses never compromised on his stated principles and stood ready to face all consequences, no matter how deep the gravity. Though he is no more with his people and will be burned in the bosom of his motherland, but his thoughts and movement will always be cherished with esteem, love and priority. 'A flower that fades is always cherished for its fragrance and beauty'. A fragrance of loving Sindh and beauty, in the words of poet "a thing of beauty is a joy for ever".
